As part of a regional health service, GV Health dietitians deliver care across multiple specialties and manage diverse patient presentations. They also have opportunities to work in specialised clinical areas, including paediatrics, home-based services, Food Services, as well as on focused projects and research initiatives.
The Nutrition & Dietetics Department, structured with Grade 1 to 3 roles, is based at the main Graham St campus. The acute and subacute hospital-based team work with patients presenting with a wide range of medical conditions.
Dietitians are also part of multidisciplinary community programs such as the Rural Allied Health Team, Community Health, Diabetes Centre, Hospital Admission Risk Program (HARP), Chronic Pain Clinic, and Ambulatory Aged Care Program.
Our areas of Nutrition & Dietetics practice
Dietitians in the acute and subacute inpatient care setting may work across the following streams:
- General Medicine
- Critical Care
- Oncology
- Paediatrics
- General Surgery
- Renal (including dialysis services)
- Mental Health Services
- Sub-acute rehabilitation
As part of a multidisciplinary team, our dietitians undertake:
- Nutrition screening and assessment
- Consultation on the dietary management of various conditions
- Ensuring nutritional adequacy of diets and fluids
- Monitoring progress and adjusting plans as needed
- Provision of alternative nutrition, including enteral and parenteral nutrition, for patients unable to manage oral intake
- Management of the GV Health Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) Program
- Education for patients, families, and carers to support discharge
- Education of nursing, medical, and postgraduate dietetic students
This diverse scope of practice highlights the integral role of dietitians in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across GV Health.
GV Health dietitians working in community settings support clients of all ages across a variety of needs. Their work includes, but is not limited to:
