Psychology Roles in Mental Health

Psychologists help people understand their experiences, make sense of what is happening for them, and build skills and strategies for recovery and wellbeing. At GV Health, psychologists provide assessment, formulation, evidence-based psychological therapies and specialist interventions. They work across a range of mental health programs and age groups, from infants, children and young people through to older adults. They also provide consultation, supervision and education to other members of the team, and contribute to service improvement and research.

Our areas of psychological practice

Clinical Psychologists hold an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology. They provide specialist assessment, formulation and evidence-based therapy for people experiencing complex mental health challenges. They often provide clinical leadership, consultation and supervision within multidisciplinary teams.

Registered Psychologists hold general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. They provide assessment and psychological therapies, and support people to develop skills and strategies for their recovery. They work closely with consumers, families, carers and the wider team.

Provisional Psychologists are completing the supervised training they need for general registration. Guided by experienced psychologists, they build skills in assessment, therapy and multidisciplinary practice across a range of mental health settings.

Psychology Registrars are registered psychologists working towards an area of practice endorsement, such as clinical psychology or clinical neuropsychology. They complete a structured registrar program, supervised by endorsed psychologists, while developing advanced specialist skills.

Neuropsychologists hold an area of practice endorsement in clinical neuropsychology. They assess how thinking, memory, attention and behaviour are affected by brain injury, illness or other conditions. Their recommendations help people, families and teams plan care and support.

Senior Psychologists are experienced practitioners who provide advanced clinical care. They also lead, supervise and mentor other psychologists. They contribute to practice development, service improvement and the quality of psychological care across the service.

Forensic Psychologists hold an area of practice endorsement in forensic psychology. They work with people whose mental health needs are connected with the legal or justice system, providing specialist assessment, therapy and risk formulation. They support people to work towards recovery and a safer future, and they provide expert advice and reports. They also help teams plan care that balances each person’s rights and wellbeing with the safety of the wider community.

Placements give postgraduate psychology students hands-on experience in public mental health. Students work under the supervision of experienced psychologists. They gain insight into assessment, therapy, recovery-oriented practice and working collaboratively with consumers, families and carers.

Psychology education roles support the learning and development of psychologists at every stage of their career. They coordinate student placements, supervision and training, and help build a skilled, confident psychology workforce for the future.
